Users Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
