Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in September and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
